Hong Kong; 5th June 2008 –Tal-os Asia, a Talent Management and Recruitment solutions firm in Asia today announced a recent “Gen X and Y Recruitment” survey revealed that majority of HR managers will not hire a candidate if they find risqué photos of them posted on the internet, including on online social networks like Facebook or Myspace.

The “Gen X and Y Recruitment” Survey conducted earlier this month has a total of 78 respondents of which 75% are in-house HR Managers and Directors, working in companies with over 100 employees.

Due to the growing popularity of social networking sites and personal blogs amongst Generation X and, particularly, Y candidates, HR executives are relying more on the internet to attract talent to work in their organisations. The poll indicated that over 60% of the respondents will not interview nor hire the candidate if they discovered risqué photographs and other provocative comments relating to alcohol consumption, drug use and or sexual exploits on their websites, blogs or elsewhere on the net.

“Individuals from Gen Y have a high propensity to utilize various internet resources for social and networking purposes. They are also more inclined to use the internet to promote themselves to companies they wish to work for,” notes Tony Dickel, Chairman of Tal-os Asia. “What they should be aware of is that this might backfire if personal information is posted inappropriately.”

Dickel adds: “Jobseekers also need to be aware that savvy recruiters, including professional recruitment organisations, are increasingly trawling the internet to obtain background information on candidates which are being seriously considered for roles.  The danger arising from posting “risqué” information extends also to that which may be posted by others, who are “friends” with you on social networks.  We therefore recommend individuals to manage their “digital footprint” very carefully!”

Generally, the survey deduces that the gap between Baby Boomers and Generation X and Y employees and employee engagement are the biggest talent management challenges for HR executives This can be attributed in part to the evolution of Hong Kong and China businesses in the past decade during which rapid globalisation and technology advancement have been more readily assimilated by a younger workforce whilst more senior workers cling on to traditional business practices.

The study also shows that about 80% of the respondents perceive a “sense of entitlement” from Gen Y employees. This confirms that Gen Y professionals are seen as favouring jobs that encompasses their personal lives and measure their performance with results versus working within a fixed amount of time. Hence to properly lead and engage Gen Y employees, HR Managers might want to consider offering Gen Y employees flexible working hours, tele-commuting and flexi-employment terms.

In addition, close to 80% of respondents believe that a mixture of leadership styles might be the best approach to engage, communicate with and motivate Gen Y staff in the workplace. “The scarcity of today’s talent pool has impacted the management styles of HR executives, leading them to explore more avenues to recruit and retain Gen Y staff,” adds Dickel. “More and more companies are posting job vacancies on job boards, company websites, online social and business networks like Linked-In, as well as looking to innovation from their recruitment partners to assist in their talent acquisition strategies and to improve their employer brand.”
